The BC Parkway is a 26-kilometre, multi-use path that roughly parallels the Expo SkyTrain Line, connecting Surrey City Centre, New Westminster, South Burnaby and Vancouver. With the development of transit oriented neighbourhoods around SkyTrain stations, the BC Parkway will become an increasingly important facility for walking and wheeling (pedestrians, commuter and recreational cyclists, wheelchair users, in-line skating etc.).
We completed the preliminary and detailed design for improvements to the BC Parkway Regional Pathway in segments of Vancouver, New Westminster, and Surrey. The design included the addition of pathway lighting, the removal of stairs and replacement with accessible grades, landscape architecture enhancements and route marking signage. We helped advance a number of unique features through the design process including a two-way cycle-track, a permanent bicycle counter, a structural retaining wall, specification of porous asphalt, and rain garden treatments. The overall effect of these improvements is expected to be an enhancement of safety and accessibility for pathway users of all ages and abilities. The detailed design and tender process were completed in 2014, with construction expected to be finished in Spring 2015.
