The Bear Street Woonerf project was an opportunity presented by the Town of Banff to Urban Systems and other firms as an exercise to create a prototype woonerf design for a street in downtown Banff. A woonerf is a street built with high quality urban design where the boundary between people space and car space is intentionally blurred. The pedestrian space is extended from the sidewalk and into the traffic zone, intentionally forcing drivers to modify their behaviour by driving more slowly. Woonerf originated in Holland as a term to describe areas where walking, cycling, playing, and socializing occurred between houses and traffic oriented streets. Woonerfs have since been adapted to more commercialized settings in North America.
