Port Mann Highway 1 – Cape Horn Interchange

Project Description

Urban Systems was responsible for preliminary and detailed design of the challenging Cape Horn Interchange segment. This section alone included 26 km of new roadway along with 15 new structures, and had an estimated construction value of $700M. The Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project (PMH1) included the construction of a the 10-lane Port Mann Bridge, widening of the highway, upgrading interchanges and improving access and safety on Highway 1. In keeping with the Provincial Transit Plan and commitment to alternative transportation, the project includes congestion reduction measures such as high occupancy vehicle lanes, transit and commercial vehicle priority measures, improvements to the cycling network and an electronic toll on the Port Mann Bridge.

Urban Systems was responsible for the geometric design and drainage design for the Cape Horn interchange. This role included the preparation of alternative concepts during the project pursuit phase, and collaboration with the contractor and other design disciplines to develop an efficient construction staging strategy.
