We worked with the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen to review and update Area D2’s Official Community Plan between 2011 and 2013. The comprehensive update created several new sections of the OCP and developed the Regional District’s first growth containment boundaries (Okanagan Falls and Skaha Estates). To inform the process, we also undertook an assessment of community infrastructure to understand future capacity and demands. Urban Systems took an active role in facilitating the appointed Citizens Advisory Committee through the process to update the plan in an engaging and consultative way.
One of the more effective consultation techniques we utilized was the Neighbourhood Pizza Sessions. Neighbourhood residents gathered together at one of their homes to go through Pizza Session workbooks, discuss issues, and provide opinions. The Regional District paid the host for pizza and beverages once they turned in their competed workbooks. Neighbours were able to share issues and enjoy some pizza together while providing effective planning input.
