Highway 97 Realignment and 4-Laning, Winfield to Oyama, BC

Project Description

As prime consultant for this assignment, Urban Systems Ltd. was responsible for overall project management, highway design, traffic engineering, major drainage design, construction cost estimates, stakeholder consultation and sub-consultant coordination.

The objective of this assignment was to evaluate alignment options, develop access management strategies and produce Preliminary, Functional and Detailed Designs for the recommended alignment option to a 4-lane RAU100 standard. The assignment involved the investigation of all feasible options for a new highway alignment and for geometric improvements at intersections (including grade separation). Thirteen alignment concepts were developed with due consideration to geotechnical, environmental and existing residential development influences, and were comparatively assessed though a Multiple Account Evaluation process. A constructability review was conducted for each of the alignment alternatives and recommendations were provided for provisional construction scheduling, practical staging, general detour routings and special traffic handling provisions.

In January 2013, Urban Systems was awarded the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Deputy Minister’s Consulting Engineer’s Award (2012-2013) for Design and Contract Preparation – Roads, for our work on the Highway 97, Winfield to Oyama project.
