We worked with HB Lanarc and Frank Ducote Urban Design to complete a Great Street Design Guidelines and Functional Design for Pinetree Way in Coquitlam. With the introduction of the Evergreen Line and plans to expand the density and style of the adjacent commercial areas to reflect a more urban atmosphere, change was needed. Coquitlam embraced looking ‘outside the box’ and into exploring innovative ideas. The Great Streets program began with a site tour of other areas for inspiration, and a two day design charette featuring guest speakers from CityWorks (Allan Jacobs and Elizabeth Macdonald). City staff from all departments and disciplines took part in developing concept sketches during the charette.
Understanding and recognizing the intended urban function of the corridor, enhancing safety and accessibility of pedestrian and cyclist safety, and developing attractive interfaces to commercial building fronts led to agreements in proposing reduced lane widths, reduced left-turn storage, and elimination of some auxiliary lanes.
