This project aimed to identify and express the unique character of Fort Chipewyan through placemaking and improvements to the public realm throughout the Community. Fort Chipewyan is located on the shores of Lake Athabasca, and is a critical part of the community’s identity stems from the waterfront interface. Adding to the challenge, Fort Chipewyan is a remote northern Albertan community that is only accessible by winter road and air travel. Through community consultation and an extensive engagement process, our team facilitated a design process that will lead to highly effective public enhancements.
New amenities that will be introduced to the community in 2013 include a waterfront boardwalk with a community table, street side benches, pedestrian lighting, and a waterfront adventure playground. The adventure playground, or natural playscape, is designed to use natural elements, such as climbing boulders, stumps and logs, in a unique way, to inspire creativity and imaginative play. Developing a strong sense of place will help promote Fort Chipewyan as a preferred community to call home and an exciting lake front destination for people to visit.
