River for Life is a 30-year strategic plan that supports the City of Edmonton’s mission to “prevent pollution by continuously reducing discharges of contaminants to the environment towards a goal of net zero impact from human activity”. The strategy was developed in three phases over a three-year period. Phase 1 focused on the development of a high-level framework for the strategy and included extensive consultation and research. A literature and policy review were conducted to identify relevant policy tools, strategies, approaches and projects that the City can employ to achieve the Strategy vision and target pollutants of concern were identified. Phase 2 focused on the development of programs and short, medium and long term implementation plans to meet the Strategy objectives. Phase 3 entailed the development of financial resources and capacity for implementation, as well as adaptive management processes.
