Providing improved mobility for the 2010 Winter Olympics, the Sea-to-Sky Highway project involved upgrades to Highway 99 between North Vancouver and Whistler. Urban Systems was responsible for preliminary and detailed design for the northernmost 26 km segment of Highway 99 between Cheakamus Canyon and Function Junction. This segment included 6 significant watercourse crossings (Rubble Creek, Cheakamus River, Daisy Channel, Brandywine Creek, Callaghan Creek and Millar Creek) and 2 railway crossings.
The objective of the $800 million highway improvement project was to address road safety, reliability and capacity issues, to meet the area’s future traffic needs, and to enhance economic development opportunities in communities along the highway. The project was completed in 2009, in time for the 2010 Olympic Games.
