Scholarship Encourages Geomatics Students
USSI establishes the Terry Hudema Memorial Scholarship
Students entering their last year of post-secondary geomatics studies are invited to submit their application for the Terry Hudema Memorial Scholarship by September 30, 2014.
The scholarship was established following the passing of Terry Hudema who had been an outstanding professional and a greatly valued friend at Urban Systems. Terry was a skilled land surveyor, a highly motivated colleague and attentive mentor. His significant contribution to the community is honoured and commemorated by family, colleagues and clients with a $2500 annual scholarship.
It was the needs (and requests) of Urban Systems’ clients that inspired Terry Hudema to spearhead a legal land survey practice, and Urban Systems Survey Inc. (USSI) was set up in May 2012. The practice quickly grew to four dedicated Alberta Land Surveyors (ALS) – two in Calgary and two in Edmonton – plus a resource team of 22 experts with over 55 years of combined experience.
“I wear many hats,” says Colin Keir, the Calgary Survey Practice Lead and Project Manager. “I’m responsible for building and developing the practice in Calgary, but I also mentor practice members and colleagues, advising them on the intricacies of the survey in both legal terms and in the construction world.” Colin looks out for the best interest of the practice to ensure it becomes a vibrant and sustainable part of Urban Systems.
USSI has invested heavily in state-of-the-art equipment (including an HDS Laser Scanner) to provide excellence in deliverables and products. USSI seeks to hire people whose skills match the high tech equipment they are using, investing significantly in professional development and mentoring.
The survey practice continues to do very well, providing significant added value to Urban Systems’ service offerings and giving the client a more comprehensive end result. The goal is to continue to strengthen the practice and eventually broaden its presence at each branch.
