Staining Planters for the Boyle Street Education Centre
Volunteers from our Edmonton office donated their lunch hour on Friday, May 10, to participate in a Foundation backyard project. They brightened up the planters at the entrance of the Boyle Street Education Centre across the street from the branch, by applying a fresh coat of stain.
The Edmonton Foundation team has helped with the Centre’s planter program since 2014. The Boyle Street Education Centre supports the educational success and social development of youth who have previously experienced interruptions in their formal learning. Students are encouraged to plant flowers and vegetables in this outdoor space.
Friday’s volunteers included: Akosua Akude, Deborah Bier, Jeff Ku, Samantha Myroniuk and Mark Taylor.
“We have Deborah to thank for planning this,” says Samantha. “I can’t wait to see it full of plants!”
“It was so much fun!” says Deborah, who saw the whole project through from organizing volunteers, sanding, staining and the finishing touches. “A huge thanks to Akosua Akude, Jared Halter, Anton Bester and Bryan Wright for all their efforts in getting the planters sanded down for us.”
Bruce Drake, the Foundation core connector at the Edmonton branch, was impressed with the before-and-after results.
“1000% improvement!” says Bruce. “Good work team!”
