Vibrant Communities Speaker Series – Finding Your Own Inner Elder- A Performance by Michelle Thrush
FIND YOUR OWN INNER ELDER is a 40 minute interactive theatrical performance that has been seen in various schools and conferences across Canada. Written in 2011 by Gemini Award winning actress Michelle Thrush, this show is a rollercoaster of emotion. Michelle speaks directly to the audience sharing moments she remembers spent with her grandmother before she passed away when Michelle was 10. She shares memories of how her Grandmother’s bannock redeemed the entire Aboriginal population of Canada in her Grade 4 classroom, to the black and white photograph carried for years that showed her Kookum as a young girl laughing, which left her constantly wondering what her grandmother was laughing about in that moment.
This imaginative show talks about the importance of reconnecting with our Elders and how impacting the stories are that our Grandparents carry. FIND YOUR OWN INNER ELDER talks about the passing of information between the generations and the strength of language. This touching show portrays the connection between 4 generations in one family. This eventually leads to the creation of an Inner Elder… named Kookum Martha! That is when the laughter begins.
Michelle does live comedy using Kookum Martha to speak to the audience. Every performance is different depending on the audience, but every performance is guaranteed to leave you wiping away tears of laughter. This character has the ability to bring out the Inner Elder in everyone! Laughter has always been our greatest strength and Kookum Martha will make you laugh until you have to catch your breath. She holds back nothing and leaves with a strong message for every audience!
