Rainy River First Nations, also known as Manitou Rapids, has a long and storied history. We partnered with the nation to create a comprehensive land use plan which received a Canadian Institute of Planners Award for Planning Excellence in the Aboriginal Community and Development Planning category. This project was actively led and developed by the community, based upon strong ancestral ties to their lands. In light of development pressures posed by resource development, the Rainy River First Nations Land Use Plan highlights the delicate balance of planning for traditional and non-traditional uses. It interweaves land use, economic development, infrastructure, and cultural planning into one document.
