Agnes Greenway: A People-First Corridor

The Agnes Greenway is a 1.2-kilometre multi-modal corridor in downtown New Westminster, connecting Victoria Hill and the Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project with the SkyTrain station and Fraser River Esplanade. The City wanted a safer, more comfortable, and more accessible route for walking, wheeling, and cycling for people of all ages and abilities. Urban Systems led landscape architecture, urban design, and public realm visioning through a tactical urbanism approach, starting with an interim installation to test the design and support community engagement before building it permanently. The team identified opportunities to go beyond a transportation route, adding street trees, pollinator plantings, rain gardens, seating, bike parking, lighting, and public art. The result is a vibrant, people-centered streetscape that combines active transportation with placemaking and green infrastructure.
